Data and information on Air Quality and pollutants

Below is data available by the American Lung Association. Although I could not locate GIS files that are available to Chicago for pollution the EPA has several reports posted that detail the information being gathered and the applications of this data.

  1. the EPA seems like it should be a good source of data for this kind of thing – dig into their portals – what kind of data do they produce, how often, what format is it made public? Beyond the EPA, what other sources of data can you image – NGO’s, local grassroots initiates, industrial self-monitoring, etc.? If there isn’t much, you could start speculating on protocols for gathering this data. For such protocols, what sort of resolution makes sense, how many sensors, who deploys the sensors, how is it paid for, how is it visualized, how does it become actionable?
