Hipster subculture is closely related to a neighborhood gentrification in Chicago area. Hipster is a contemporary youth subculture group in the North America and Europe and primarily living in an urban areas. basic signature of a hipster is that the group is in their 20s to 30s that value independent thinking, counter-culture, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, and mostly educated. In the article The Migration of the Hipster, Aimee Levitt discuses the phenomena of hipster migration occur in Chicago in the past 100 years. The migration of the Hipsters believed to cause change and shift in Chicago area neighborhood. Hipster’s counter-culture characteristic, before-it-was-cool, believes as the reason why they migrated to places. The hipsters can turns the neighborhood that once cheap and outdated become expensive and overvalue. But does the gentrification of a neighborhood is good or bad for the community?
Gentrification is the shifting process of a poor working class neighborhood in the inner city by the stream of private capital and middle-class community. Gentrification in neighborhood might or might not beneficial to the existing neighborhood. Thus using data and GIS, we are able to analyze the characteristic of a certain subculture that might affect change in a community or neighborhood in Chicago.
1. Analyze the basic characteristic of a hipster and create a basic class UML diagram to outline the factor that contributes to the research. Some important factor to determine a hipster neighborhood are the Age ratio, median income, property value, race/ethnicity, and the education level of the population.
2. Having the well-known hipster neighborhood such as Wicker Park in Chicago as a case study to analyze the characteristic and behavior of a typical hipster neighborhood.
3. Using the Data and GIS to compare and contrast the differences and similarities of neighborhood that has potential to become the next hipster neighborhood.
